Catholic Controversy Over Nun Adverts

by Rachael Grant

Members of the Catholic community were outraged when they saw a magazine advert in Boston, USA, that depicted a group of nuns sketching a naked man.

Terry Donilon, of the Boston Archdiocese, stated that ‘it’s offensive to an entire community of religious who give their lives to the good work of the church.’

Equinox Fitness, who defended the advert in the latest issue of Boston Magazine, replied to the comments, saying that ‘the ads capture the energy and artistry of the well conditioned body in a thought provoking fashion, blending fantasy and impact.’

Sister Martha Moss, of The Daughters of Saint Paul said in response that they could ‘build up advertisements that could build up the human person instead of taking down people’s sense of God.’

The Equinox gym in Boston, the company the ad was for, can be found in the Back Bay, with other branches of their gyms in major cities across America.
