Founder of Legionaries of Christ Dies, Aged 87

by Rachael Grant

The Rev. Marcial Maciel, died yesterday, January 30th, aged 87. Maciel, who founded the Legionaries of Christ religious order, and who was disciplined by Pope Benedict XVI after sex abuse allegations, died of natural causes. A statement released by the conservative religious order, on its website, termed Maciel ‘the beloved founding father’.

The Legionaries were founded by Maciel in Mexico City in 1941, and is held in high esteem by Pope John Paul II because of their loyalties to church teachings, and their active participation in recruiting new members.

It hasn’t been stated whether accusations by former seminarians that Maciel sexually abused them are true, but the Vatican did say that Maciel was asked to spend his life praying, renouncing every public ministry. This meant that he could not celebrate Mass in public, and thus effectively he was priest in name only.

Maciel, as well as the Legionaries, denied all of the allegations, although when he was disciplined by the Vatican, the order said that he’d accepted the decision.

The accusations were first investigated in 1998, when nine former seminarians came forward to say that they had been abused by Maciel in Catholic seminaries in Italy and Spain between 1940 and 1960. The Vatican then announced, in 2006, that because of Maciel’s age and poor health, they would not be conducting a full church trial.

A private funeral will be held in accordance with Maciel’s wishes.
