Rally Against Plans To End Scarf Ban in Turkey

by Rachael Grant

On Saturday, tens of thousands of secular Turks protested against plans by the government that will allow for female students to wear headscarves in universities. The protestors believe that the move would bring a stricter form of Islam into Turkey.

The constitutional amendment is supposed to be approved by Parliament this week, and aims to ease the ban of headscarves in university buildings, passed in 1989.

The protestors waved national flags and banners featuring founder of the republic, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, who separated state and religion. “Turkey is secular and will remain secular!” they were heard to be shouting.

The secular establishment, which also includes judges and army generals, feel that the head scarf is a threat, and is a symbol of radical Islamism.

Ali Babacan, the Foreign Minister, at a news conference on Saturday, said that the move purported that the plans would help to expand freedom in Turkey.
