Pope Lends Support Via SMS

by Rachael Grant

Austrian Catholics are being offered support during Lent the modern way - with a mobile message from Pope Benedict XVI.

The SMS messages will be sent daily during the 40 days of Lent in an effort to help the faithful with their traditional fasts.

The texts, which are sent in German, and stem from sermons given by the pope during a visit to Austria in September last year, include phrases such as: “The further development and dignity of a society depends on those people who do more than their duty” and “Resignation in the face of truth is, I am convinced, at the core of the crisis in the West and in Europe”.

Spokesmen for the Church have revealed that they hope this new approach will encourage a younger generation to get involved.

If you’re interested in receiving texts, you can sign up for free by sending a text with the word “Papst” (German for ‘Pope’), to the Austrian mobile number 0664 660 6651. Local network charges may apply.
