As al-Queda’s increasingly brutal attacks in Iraq continue, various groups within the Muslim world have begun to reduce or withdraw their financial support for Osama Bin Laden’s terrorist network, high-ranking U.S. intelligence officials informed Congress last week.
CIA Director Gen. Michael V. Hayden informed the government that there is mounting evidence of an Islamic review of al-Queda’s leadership and goals. As more and more Muslims are themselves killed in Iraq by members of their own self-proclaimed ‘extremist vanguard’, al-Queda, leaders of the terrorist group are being forced to engage in a transparent discourse with the body of the Islamic membership.
Al-Queda is reportedly having increased difficulty raising the funds needed to support their operations; a trend of decline which seems to have commenced a year past, when Saudi authorities began arresting alleged al-Qaeda members after terrorist attacks in their country.
Senior intelligence officials were nonetheless quick to point out that al-Queda remains the number one terrorist threat in the world, despite their apparently waning support network.
