Mitt Romney, the former Governor of Massachusetts, has brought increased attention to the Mormon faith since the beginning of his Republican nomination run. A member of the religion for many years now, Romney’s recent media attention has revealed to the church to just what extent the American people would be “uncomfortable” with a Mormon president.
Throughout his campaign, critics of the Mormon church have engaged in regular public attacks, denouncing both cultural and doctrinal practices within the religion. These attacks, a boon for Romney’s secular critics, have caused inevitable collateral damage to his ongoing campaign.
With polls revealing that vastly more Americans would prefer an African-American or female president to a Mormon one, the church is finding the pressure of such public scrutiny to be increasingly unfavorable. Indeed, the recent Wall Street Journal poll, generated late last month, indicated that as many as 50% of Americans would be “very uncomfortable” about a Mormon president. In light of the fact that the very same poll revealed that 81% of participants would take no issue with an African American president, and that 76% were “enthusiastic” about the prospect of a female president, it seems that the Mormon church is in dire need of improved public relations.
