Scientology Receives Another Blow with Masked Protests

by Rachael Grant

A group of masked demonstrators calling themselves ‘Anonymous’ congregated outside of the Church of Scientology in London on 10th February to protest what the group call the Church’s ‘inherent flaws’ and ‘fight for freedom of knowledge and information’, marking the birthday of Lisa McPherson, who died in 1995 under the care of the organisation.

Over two hundred people took part in the peaceful protest in Queen Victoria Street where the Police attended, and after about two hours the protestors relocated to the Scientology Recruitment Centre in Tottenham Court Road where they continued their protests.

It has been said that similar protests have also taken place outside other Scientology Centres across the U.K, as well as the U.S and Canada.

Anonymous broadcast a video online, prior to the protests, where they explained their existence as a group that would ’systematically dismantle the Church of Scientology in its present form’. They went on to make it clear that they were not trying to infringe on the beliefs of those who were members of the Church, but rather campaign against ‘toxic ideals’ and a leadership they termed ‘corrupt’.

Speaking against the actions, Janet Laveau, a spokesperson for the Church, called the protestors ‘cyber-terrorists’ she insisted were motivated purely by religious bigotry. “The actions of Anonymous will not interrupt the church’s normal activities serving its parishioners and the community, and the church is working in co-ordination with local authorities to minimize the negative impact of this mask-wearing, cyber-terrorist group,” she said.
