Death Penalty Sought For 9/11 Detainees

by Rohan Parker

According to government officials on Sunday, military prosecutors in the cases of six Guantánamo detainees are seeking the death penalty. Allegedly, the six all had vital roles in the terror attacks on September 11.

The six men, including the self-described mastermind behind the attack and former Al Qaeda operations chief Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, are said to be facing multiple charges of war-crimes concluding in the deaths of almost 3,000 people.

Although no personnel from the Defense Department are allowed to speak openly about the case yet, an anonymous official has stated that the reason behind the decision to seek the death penalty is that because they are certain that being involved in the murder of such a large number of civilians is enough to warrant such punishment.

At this stage, the military commission, which has received mistrustful criticism, is yet to bring a single case to trial. Seeking the death penalty for these six criminals will again draw international focus to the seemingly frail commission.
