In Singapore a giant retailer has withdrawn a cosmetics range that has a Jesus theme after receiving complaints from Roman Catholics.
‘Lookin’ Good For Jesus’, the name of the range by American company Blue Q, was available at three Topshop stores in the Asian city state. Products included items such as ‘Virtuous Vanilla’, a lip balm with a twist, and ‘Get Tight with Christ’, which is a hand and body cream, the packaging of which features Jesus being adored by two women.
Catholics complained that the range trivialised Christianity, and found that the sexual innuendo involved was distasteful to Singapore’s Christians, who make up roughly 15% of the 4.4 million population.
Grace Ong, 24, an account, wondered why anyone would dream of using religious figures to promote a cosmetics range. “It’s very distasteful,” she said.
A spokesman for the Wing Tai company, who run Topshop in Singapore, replied that they had no intention of offending customers, and that they would immediately withdraw the stock from their stores.
