Californian Death Penalty Under Consideration

by Rohan Parker

Both prosecutors and defense lawyers came to the agreement last Wednesday that the Californian death penalty structure was in serious need of re-evaluation, however could not agree on what was the cause and solution to the issues facing the system.

A hearing was held in Los Angeles in front of a state reform commission in which the prosecutors requested a faster appeals method and an amendment to the Californian Constitution to allow the Supreme Court the ability to send some initial review cases to state level appeals courts.

According to the defense lawyers, however, this would only lead to a more complicated and wearisome process.

The request from the defense lawyers was that they reduce the list of crimes where the death penalty could be asked for and also allocate more funds for those lawyers who represent indicted murderers.
