Obama Invokes Sermon on the Mount in Ohio

by Rohan Parker

Sunday saw Democrat presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama cite the Sermon on the Mount during a discussion on civil unions in Nelsonville, Ohio.

The reference was made in response to a query put to Obama by Pastor Leon Forte (the head of the Grace Christian Center in Athens, Ohio) regarding the senator’s faith.

Forte outlined his perception that Obama’s campaign had caused some confusion and division amongst evangelicals - believing as they do in Obama’s social agenda, and objecting as they have to the conservatives “moral litmus test about who is worthy and who is not”.

The senator responded to Forte’s question by assuring him that he is now and has always been a devout, church-going Christian.
