U.S. Immigration Profiling Muslims Based On Nationality

by Rohan Parker

According to a leaked document from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) bureau, since the September 11 attacks on the U.S., federal law enforcement agencies have been using nationality as a method of screening potential risks to the country. Critics have slammed these methods stating they will promote the current misinterpretation of Muslims within the U.S. even more so.

The document, a memo from Ted Stark who is a supervisory special agent with the Office of Intelligence at ICE, is dated February 2006 and was initially released by McClatchy Newspapers. The memo illustrates that the U.S. federal government is using nationality based profiling more than ever before thought.

In the memo, Stark wrote that so many federal agencies now have lists of countries that they believe to be of special interest for security reasons and that officials had considered implementing one large list across all agencies as a means of streamlining the process.
