Pope Announces New Saints

by Rachael Grant

Four candidates have been granted Sainthood by Pope Benedict XVI, and will be formally listed on the 12th October.

The list includes Narcisa de Jesus Martillo Moran, who died in 1869; Maria Bernarda Buetler, the founder of Congregation of the Missionary Franciscan Sisters of Mary Help of Christians, who died in 1924; Gaetano Errico, the founder of the Congregation of the Missionaries of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, who died in 1860; and Anna Muttathupandathu (a.k.a Alfonsa of the Immaculate Conception) who was part of the Congregation of Poor Clares of the Third Order of St Francis, and is reportedly the first Roman Catholic Saint in India. She died in 1946.

There has recently been documents released by the Vatican, impressing the importance of the selection process of Sainthood, encouraging Bishops to take a careful look at the holiness of candidates, as well as repeating that Sainthood could only be bestowed five years after the death of the candidate, and that miracles should be closely examined.
