Religious Buildings Awarded Lottery Funds
by Rachael Grant
Over £15 million of National Lottery funds has been allocated to historical churches in England that are desperately needing maintenance.
Many of the one hundred and sixty buildings that will benefit are grade one or two listed buildings, and are currently relying solely on the donations from members of the general public.
“Many of these time-worn treasures are only maintained through the hard work of small and hard-pressed communities,” said English Heritage chief executive, Dr Simon Thurley, a sentiment shared by Diane Evans, also of English Heritage, who added that “these buildings make a vital contribution to our national heritage”.
£114,000 of the allocated funds will be going to All Saints Greek Orthodox church in Camden, London, which will receive a new roof and have the front of the church cleaned. £37,000 is also being awarded to St Martin’s church in Ancaster, Lincolnshire.
Repair Grants for Places of Worship scheme, a combined effort of the English Heritage and the Heritage Lottery Fund, has to date given over £118 million in grants.
