Sikhs Refuse To Meet Pope Without Ceremonial Attire
by Rohan Parker
Ceremonial attire for Sikhs requires five articles be present on any male adherent to the faith, one of those articles is the kirpan, a small ceremonial dagger. However Secret Service operatives in the U.S. are refusing representatives from the Sikh community the right to wear their kirpans when meeting with the Pope when he visits this year, and as such, the Sikh delegates are now refusing to attend.
The Sikhs had been extended an invitation to attend a 45 minute meeting with the Pope and many other religious leaders from the U.S. in Washington on April 17 which was organized as an expression of a unified commitment to peace.
The World Sikh Council has responded saying that they were permitted their kirpan’s when meeting with Pope John Paul II in the Vatican, and as such will not comply with the Secret Service’s demands now.
