The 2008 Templeton Prize has been awarded to Michael Heller, a Polish born, world renown theologian, cosmologist, and philosopher whose work has always been to reconcile the worlds of religion and science. Heller lived through both the Nazi regime and communist rule in Poland.
The prize, which is awarded yearly, is worth over $1.6 million and is given to those who make significant progress towards either research or discoveries about spiritual realities and it is the mission of the John Templeton Foundation to act as benevolent catalysts for the continued search for answers to life’s biggest questions.
Heller is the author of 5 books in English, and 30 in Polish, and is an ordained Roman Catholic priest. It is his life’s work to raise communications between the science and religious worlds. He is also a professor of philosophy at the Pontifical Academy in Krakow, Poland.
The founder and director of the Center for Theology and the Natural Sciences in Berkeley, California, said of Heller that he was one of the most important contributors in international scholarly communications and that his ongoing dedication to the creative dialogue on science, theology, and philosophy is admirable and he is the best example of those who bridge the gaps in these discourses.
