Violent Reaction to Cartoons Ongoing

by Rohan Parker

Kurt Westergaard is a cartoonist who, in 2006, drew one of the Muhammad cartoons which sparked violent protests and led Westergaard to be in hiding ever since.

When asked about being in hiding, Westergaard responded by saying that he thought he was living in safe house number 5 now, but wasn’t sure. Just last month, another plot to murder the cartoonist was foiled, leading to the arrests of two Tunisians and a Dane of Moroccan descent.

in 2006, Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten printed a series of cartoons depicting Muhammad, drawn by 12 different cartoonists who all now have bounties on their heads, as well as the editor of the paper, Flemming Rose. Westergaard’s cartoon showed Muhammad with a bomb in his turban.

The issue has been all but forgotten around the world, however after these latests arrests, there is fresh controversy about the cartoons, because the 17 Danish newspapers who did not print the pictures back in 2006, have now printed them as a sign of solidarity with Westergaard. Protests have since erupted in many areas, from Indonesia to Gaza.
