by Rachael Grant
After a Muslim man has claimed that he has been degraded in Whitemoor Prison, Cambridgeshire, UK, female officers have been prevented from attending while male inmates are strip-searched.
The prisoner reported to the Muslim News that he felt oppressed and provoked on a daily basis at the prison, and that he was forced to strip in front of a female officer.
Ahmed Versi, the editor of Muslim News, said that one of the Muslim prisoners wrote to the paper, admitting that he felt he was withdrawing into himself, and refused to interact with staff anymore.
The Ministry of Justice admits that the search in front of a female officer took place, and that since the incident, says procedures have improved so that it can be avoided in the future.
Director General of the Prison Service, Phil Wheatley, says that he felt the direction of the prison has improved and that significant changes have been made. He went on to say that he couldn’t guarantee that all of the prisoners were happy, but that he would make certain that there would not be any prejudice on the grounds of race, religion or any other factors.
