Two Christian men were told by a Police Community Support Officer to stop distributing gospel leaflets in a predominantly Muslim area of Birmingham, England, suggesting that they were inciting a hate crime.
Arthur Cunningham, 48, and Joseph Abraham, 65, (both pastors at Grace Fellowship Church in Saltley, Birmingham) were distributing leaflets on 19th February when the officer told them that they were committing a hate crime by trying to convert the Muslims in the area.
He asked them to leave, and warned them that they were likely to be beaten up if they returned.
The men have also said that upon realising they were both American, the police officer started ranting about American politics and foreign policy.
Following an investigation, a West Midlands Police spokeswoman said that the officer intervened to diffuse a row between Cunningham, Abraham, and a group of Muslim youths, and that by doing so he had the best of intentions.
The two men, backed by The Christian Institute, complained to the police, and have demanded an apology as well as asking for damages, saying that their human rights were infringed upon.
The police officer in question has since been offered guidelines as to what exactly a hate crime is, as well as advice to improve his communication abilities on the job.
