June 11, 2008Construction begins on UK’s first Hindu school
by David Masters
Construction on the UK’s first ever Hindu state school began this week, in Harrow, north London.
The beginning of the building work was celebrated with a traditional Hindu religious ceremony, Bhoomi Puja, conducted by adherents to the religion when foundations are laid.
Ancient prayers were chanted backed by the rhythmic music of traditional Indian drums.
The Kirshna-Avanti Primary school will open to pupils in September, with classes held in a temporary building until construction work is complete.
Children of practising Hindus will be given priority in the school’s admission policy. Lessons will include Yoga, Sanskrit and vegetable growing; all school dinners will be vegetarian.
Around one third of all state schools in the UK are faith schools, most of which are Christian.
There are currently 37 Jewish state schools, seven Muslim schools, and two Sikh schools.
Following widespread support for the new Hindu school, at least two more are expected to open within the next few years.
