A raid on the Yearning For Zion Ranch in Forth Worth, Texas, where over 460 kids were removed, is expected to have racked up over $14 million in fees.
The ranch, which is owned by the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, had the children removed into the custody of the State Protective Services agency, but they were returned to their families two months later, after the Texas Supreme Court reversed the original order.
A third of the $14 million is predicted to be eaten up by legal fees, which included paying for both the state lawyers, and legal representatives for the children, as well as fees for expert witnesses, judges, and office supplies.
A further $2.4 million was used to house the children, and to rent buses for them to travel in, as well as $110,000 which was soaked up by DNA tests to prove the parentage of the children.
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram, who published the findings in a review of well over four hundred documents, including invoices and emails, have warned that the estimate does not include bills submitted by private charities or from state employees, and that this figure could well rise.
