Archbishop: Christian beliefs may offend Muslims

by David Masters

The Archbishop of Canterbury has acknowledged that Christian beliefs can be offensive to Muslims.

In a letter published yesterday, Dr. Rowan Williams admitted that the Christian doctrine of the Trinity contrasts with the Islamic view that there is only one all powerful God.

Dr. Williams also criticised the violent history of Christianity and admitted that many believers had betrayed the peaceful principles of the religion.

The letter, written in response to Muslim leaders who requested dialogue, also highlights the peaceful nature of Islam, and called for an alliance between the two faiths for the ‘common good’.

Recipients of the letter are invited to an interfaith conference on violence in October, which it is hoped will be an opportunity for ‘open and caring dialogue’.
