Democrats host interfaith gathering

by David Masters

America’s Democratic Party held its first ever interfaith gathering on Sunday in Colorado.

Presented as an opportunity to ‘honour the diverse faith traditions inside the Democratic Party’, the gathering of 5,000 listened to speeches touching upon topics as wide ranging as warfare and forgiveness.

A gospel choir led the meeting in worship.

The meeting was interrupted by anti-abortion protestors who shouted ‘Obama is a baby killer’.

Conference attendees quickly drowned out the protestors’ shouts with boos and counter claims before the two men were withdrawn from the building.

Speakers at the meeting included Sister Helen Prejean, a Catholic social activist; Ingrid Mattson, president of the Islamic Society of North America; and Rabbi Tzvi Herst Weinreb, executive vice president of the Jewish Orthodox Union.
