Dalai Lama cancels visits due to exhaustion

by David Masters

Tibetan Buddhist leader, the Dalai Lama, has cancelled all his engagements for the next three weeks due to exhaustion.

A statement released from the Dalai Lama’s office said he has been experiencing ‘discomfort’ due to his exhaustion, and will be visiting a doctor in Mumbai for medical tests.

The 73 year old monk’s trips to Mexico and the Dominican Republic have been cancelled, and he has decided not to undertake a 12 hour fast in protest against China’s poor human rights record in Tibet, which did not improve during the Olympics.

Officials in Beijing have accused the Dalai Lama of causing unrest in Tibet.

The spiritual leader fled to India in 1959 following an uprising against Chinese rule in Tibet.

He says he only seeks limited autonomy for Tibet, but Chinese authorities accuse him of seeking full independence for the Himalayan region.
