UK’s first Hindu school starts term

by David Masters

The UK’s first Hindu school opened for teaching today, with 30 new five-year old pupils entering its doors.

Pupils at the Kirshna Avanti Primary School will be taught according to Hindu values, with class content covering the national curriculum.

A unique programme of religious education has been agreed with local authorities. The focus will be on Hindu values such as inclusivity, equality and the agency of the individual.

Eventually the £11 million school, currently being built on a five acre site in Edgware, north London, will house 240 pupils between the ages of five and eleven.

Facilities at the new school will include a meditation garden, an amphitheatre for outside teaching, and eco-friendly innovations, including a grass roof.

Its 30 new recruits are being housed in temporary accommodation in a nearby school whilst building work is completed.

Hindu leaders hope it will be the first of many similar schools in the UK. Britain has a Hindu population of 800,000.
