Clergy gather to mourn Bishop of Peterborough

by David Masters

The Archbishop of Canterbury paid tribute to the late Bishop of Peterborough at his funeral service yesterday.

Dr Rowan Williams and two other clergy members led the Rt Revd Ian Cundy’s funeral service, which was attended by 1,300 people, including all 40 Church of England bishops and senior clergy from a variety of Christian denominations.

Bishop Cundy died suddenly earlier this month, aged 64. He had been suffering from lung cancer, and had announced his retirement.

He is the first bishop to die whilst in office in the UK in a quarter of a century.

The funeral service was prepared by Bishop Cundy before he died, and Dr Williams conducted the service according to Bishop Cundy’s wishes, inviting mourners to contemplate the ‘mystery’ of God.

The bishop leaves a widow, Jo, and three adult children, Robert, Paul, and Elizabeth, and a new grandson.

A private family burial ceremony was held in the Cathedral grounds.
