Obama set to address Muslim world
by David Masters
US President Barack Obama has arrived in Egypt where he will deliver a speech to the world’s Muslims, striving to heal the rift between Islam and America.
His speech, aimed at the over one billion Muslims around the world, will seek to win support for US foreign policy from moderate Muslim countries.
No specific policies will be proposed in Obama’s address, US officials said, although they stressed that Obama will engage in-depth with issues that have “cause tensions between the United States and the Muslim world.”
Obama will also explain his policies in Afghanistan and Iraq, and try to win the backing of Muslim governments to revive stalled peace talks between Israeli and Palestinian leaders.
White House officials said the speech alone will not bridge the divide between the US and Islam, but will be a catalyst to “re-energise dialogue with the Muslim world”.
