Evangelical bishop appointed in Southwell and Nottingham

by Sara Levy

The Bishop of Southampton, the Right Reverend Paul Butler, has been promoted to a new role as Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham.

The 53 year-old bishop, renowned for his conservative Evangelicalism, has served in his current post for five years.

He will be the first Bishop to be enthroned under the new dual-role diocesan title of Southwell and Nottingham, and will replace Right Reverend George Cassidy, who is due to retire later this month.

Bishop Butler has strong ties with Nottingham, having studied and worked there during the 1970s.

“It’s really good to be back and I look forward to being here in the city and around the villages,” he said.

“The good news of Jesus Christ is transforming for both individuals and communities.

“I long to share in the task of making this good news known to people of all ages and backgrounds.”

Bishop Butler, who is married with four children, was appointed in 2005 an ‘advocate for children” within the Anglican church.

Canon Ruth Worsley, area dean for Nottingham South, said Butler’s work on children’s issues made him stand out as the top candidate for the role.

“His interest in children’s issues was a key thing as we needed to see more development with our work with children and young people,” Worsley said.

She added that the appointing panel were impressed by the Bishop’s commitment to Christian work overseas.
