Halal make-up is alcohol and pig free
by Benjamin Graham
A Muslim make-up artist has launched a new range of cosmetics that are halal (permitted) for women to wear under Islamic law.
Canadian Muslim-convert Layla Mandi designed OnePure cosmetics to be free from alcohol and animal residues.
Islamic law forbids alcohol, pork, and other animal products where the animal was not killed according to procedures set out in the Qur’an.
Cosmetics, including shampoos, facemasks, and lipsticks, often contain fatty acids and gelatins sourced from pigs.
“Muslims don’t want to go around and pray five times a day having pork residues on their body,” said Mandi.
Having trialled the product in the Middle East, she expects it to become a global success among Muslim women.
“I came to the Middle East to learn about people’s needs,” she said.
“Most were shocked when I said there were pork products in skincare items, they were very interested.”
