Prisoners kneel before holy relics
by Benjamin Graham
Inmates at Wormwood Scrubs prison were given the chance to venerate the relics of a 19th century Roman Catholic Saint yesterday.
Bodily remains of St Terese of Lisieux visited the London prison as part of their tour of England and Wales.
Around 100 of the prison’s 300 Roman Catholic inmates were chosen to take part in a special Mass marking the visit of the relics to Wormwood Scrubs.
With appropriate reverence, the inmates knelt and prayed before the gold and wooden casket containing the relics.
St Therese died of tuberculosis in 1897, aged 24.
Her life has captured the imagination of many Catholics for its humility and simplicity.
Pope Pius X described her as the “greatest saint of modern times” and said she would spend her time in heaven working for good on earth.
The month-long tour of her relics around England and Wales draws to a close this week.
