Hindus request interfaith talks with Evangelicals

by Benjamin Graham

A leading Hindu has called for interfaith dialogue with Evangelical Christians following the election of a new chairperson of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD).

Margot Kässmann, once described as a “mixture of Mother Teresa and Demi Moore”, was elected as EKD chairperson with 132 of the 142 votes cast.

Rajan Zed, president of the US Society of Hinduism, welcomed Kässmann’s appointment, and said he hopes that under her leadership the EKD will engage in interfaith dialogue and work with other religious groups on common causes such as peace, ecological responsibility, and social development.

Interfaith dialogue brings mutual enrichment and helps to break down barriers of prejudice, Zed said.

“Dialogue helps us to see interconnections and interdependencies between religions and even similarities in doctrines,” he said.

“In our shared quest for the truth, we can learn from one another and thus come closer to the truth.”

Kässmann is the first female chairperson of the EKD.

The EKD is an umbrella organisation for 22 regional Lutheran, Reformed and United Protestant churches in Germany. It claims membership of over 25 million people.
