I think both are valid depending on where you're coming from. In fundamental terms you have to BE before you can THINK. But BECAUSE of that, being able to THINK confirms that you ARE. Which is what I think Descartes was doing - he was able to confirm his own existence by acknowledging his thinking.

What is the definition of woke? Nobody can ever say (with your line about beatitudes you're at least inclining towards defining) but the word woke always seems to be used for people whose hearts are in the right place.
