What To Make Of The Old Testament

I'm sorry that I didn't respond. I didn't get notice that there were replies' Take the Garden of Eden. Most ignore the clues that it was where fig trees grew. There is only a hundred miles or less, north to south, between the Tigris and Euphrates, where wild figs grew. The Garden had to be...

What To Make Of The Old Testament

I worked as a chemist for many years. I am also a devout protestant who studies the Bible carefully. I see no problem or conflict between the two. What I do have a problem with is the religious who interpret the scriptures without considering science, and then defending their interpretation...

What To Make Of The Old Testament

The sad thing is that the popular interpretation of Genesis conflicts with science. A very careful read of the book comes up with a different picture. For example, The story of Adam and Eve shows that it is not the story of the first two humans. It is the description of the location, time...

What To Make Of The Old Testament

Yes, it seems horrible to us. Remember that people didn't have social security or IRAs etc. There only hope for old age was to have children. Remember also that Adam had a son Abel. Abel means vain or empty. He was called that because he left no children. Ones place in history came through...

What To Make Of The Old Testament

I do accept the stories in Genesis as accurate. I don't accept the usual interpretations as accurate. I am a chemist and worked in the C14 and other isotopes field. I have no problem with science or evolution and a literal interpretation of Genesis doesn't either. The Bible only preserves...

What To Make Of The Old Testament

I didn't see you respond to anything yet. Are you still here? I am both a Christian and a scientist. For years, I avoided the books of Moses because of the interpretations that so conflicted with science. As I studied the texts in depth, I came to believe in the scientific accuracy of even...

    Aramaic Translation Of The Bible

What Jesus spoke is irrelevant to the Old Testament, except where he quotes the Old Testament. What is important is that the Masoretic text inserted vowels around 900 AD. The Aramaic, the Septuagint, and the Samaritan Bibles, being much older often show us where ancient people separated the...

    Aramaic Translation Of The Bible

The problem is the question of When. Our Masoretic texts are fairly recent. Can we show that the Masoretic text is unchanged? no. The Septuagint was known to have been translated 100 or more years before Christ. The Septuagint was quoted in the Bible, not the Masoretic. The Samaritan Bible...

    Aramaic Translation Of The Bible

I have been studying the Septuagint. The main difference is in the numbers for year prior to David, especially the numbers found in the books of Moses. The Aramaic generally agrees with the Septuagint. I have found that the numbers agree much better with history than the Masoretic text.

the snake & the apple , (Hesiod)

If you don't tie the account of the Garden to known history/Archaeology of the time, you can make it say anything. There is an "adultery" component to this story, but it seems to be related to the use of the priestesses/temple prostitutes back then. The original posts were using the greek...

the snake & the apple , (Hesiod)

I love how people give up on the Garden and just make it spiritual. Yes, there is a spiritual aspect, but making the Garde the whole universe weakens the message and allows a person to make it say anything they want. There was a discussion on which fruit. Only one fruit tree is mentioned by...
