Baha'is around the world will be observing the anniversary of the martyrdom of the Bab on July 9th ... this is one of the nine days on which work and school will be suspended.

On July 9th 1850 the Bab was dragged around the city having His death warrant signed by the leading Mullahs .. Eventually He was placed in a holding cell near the place of execution a dusty barracks square in Tabriz.

An Armenian Christian battalion under command of a Sam Khan lined up in the square ... this battalion composed of seven hundred fifty riflemen. Sam Khan had asked the Bab to be spared the onus of executing Him but the Bab told him to carry out his orders..

Just prior to the execution the Bab was having a conversation with one of His followers and was interrupted by being carried out out to be executed He said.. He would finish the conversation with His disciple..

The Bab and a young disciple who chose to be martyred with the Him were hung suspended from a peg in the wall of the caravansary.. The young man named Anis asked that his body be placed over that of the Bab..and so it was.

Spectators lined the roof and other places to observe the execution.

Finally the word was given .. a a silence and then the order to fire was given.. the smoke from the musket rifles filled the square and when it cleared only the young disciple of the Bab stood there.. The Bab was no where to be seen.. Shouts and confusion ensued.. The Bab was in the very cell He had been removed from earlier and was found finishing His conversation with His disciple as He had predicted earlier..

Sam Khan the commander of the battalion refused to carry out a replay of the execution and asked to be excused. Another Battalion had to be drawn up to carry out the execution.. this time a Muslim battalion.. again seven hundred muskets were raised and trained on the Bab and His disciple.. this time the bullets found their mark and the riddled bodies were later dragged around Tabriz and thrown into a mote around the city.. Forty soldiers were commissioned to see that the remains were not stolen by the Bab's disciples.. but that night the remains were secreted by the followers of the Bab and the remains were hidden for about fifty years until they were formally interred on the Shrine of the Bab on Mount Carmel by Abdul-Baha in 1909.
