To this day, Carnevale and Mardi Gras are celebrated in Venice with food and wine, relaxed sexual mores, masks, and transvestism (in the literal sense of the word). During carnival we humans get to pretend to be whatever or whoever we want to be.

I just learned why it's called Fat Tuesday. Fat Tuesday is the day to eat all of that 'extra' food in the house and get rid of it, in order to begin fasting the next day.

Ah, Etu Malku, now that's what I call 'using it up'!

In our house we just do pancakes (our Canadian son-in-law looks on disdainfully: 'that's not a pancake, that's a crepe,' he tells us, 'just because you Brits have a thing about the French, you call 'em pancakes ... man, it's almost transparent!)

But we introduced him to a choc-ice wrapped (crepe) pancake, doused in Grand Marnier, which knocks spots off maple syrup!

Good Lent all,

Thomas
