Pope Francis has spoken on the issue, admitting that Benedict XVI shut down a congregation of nuns because they were being abused by priests.

Speaking to reporters while on his tour of the Middle East, Francis admitted that the Church had an issue, the roots of which lie in "seeing women as second class".

Having said that, Francis has also stated categorically that the ordination of women is against the norms of the church — so they're not entirely equal.

Interesting that #MeToo was an influence here.

The disbanding of convents where nuns were molested by priests, the ordering the pregnant nuns to have abortions, combined with the holier than thou anti abortion rhetoric I've heard my entire life makes me just shake my head.

We got actors coming out and apologizing for their past it is really time for the church to let go the shield of the confessional on this stuff and oust preachers enmasse and quit shuffling and protecting those that violate not only their own rules but the law.

Yeah, let there be Justice and all the filth to be exposed and cleansed, corrected, remedied as much as possible, given recompense and restitution and all that. Crimes are continuing everywhere and being protected by a lack of transparency and people disbelieving in a truly rotten world.
