Traditional New Year's Meal

Do you know of one?

Pork ribs baked in saurkraut with mashed potatoes is traditional in my family and my mom claims that it is a common New Year's meal. My husband says he's never heard of this before (and that we are nuts :D ). I've also heard of ham as a traditional meal.

What's your traditional New Year's dinner?

i dont really have one but in the past have done creamed herring in white wine & mom says black eyed peas (for good luck).

this will be interesting. :)
 
Yep, from what I understand, one must eat black-eyed peas. My dad makes a dish called "Hoppin' John" which consists of black-eyed peas, onions, peppers, and crumbled cornbread (or is it rice?). Can't remember at the moment, but it is really good. He may add some ham or bacon sometimes, but not always.

Maybe I have always heard about the black-eyed peas because I don't live too far from Athens, TX, the "Black-Eyed Pea Capitol of the World".:)

(Addendum to above post)

There's about 8 minutes left in the Rose Bowl game, and the Longhorns are down by 5. I guess we are about to see if they had any black-eyed peas on New Year's Day??

So, I was in the room while my hub watched the game, which just ended. Sounds like Texas is celebrating tonight. :)

:D What a fourth quarter! Wow--and my husband got "the shirt" for Christmas this year. Poor thing--he is the real UT fan around here, but he has been so busy helping me with some stuff the past few days that he slept through it (He's gonna kill me for telling that!).

Anyway--speaking of New Year's food and longhorns, what about New Year's Day breakfast? Black-eyed peas notwithstanding (cowpeas, they are sometimes called--LOL, before anyone says it, no NOT cowPIES:)!), I usually wind up finishing off leftover party food like cheese and crackers. I have a question for y'all, one that I have pondered for years. Get ready, now--it is quite profound....

For those of you who have tasted the party staple called "Sociables" (crackers), does anyone think that the star-shaped ones tasted different? Or is it just me?
