The latest battlefront in the annual "war on Christmas" has fallen into the Gap, so to speak, as clothing giant Gap Inc. is accused of silencing the word "Christmas" in stores and many of its commercials...

The fact that the 'American Family Association' is spending its dollars searching thru literature to find out if stores use the word Christmas in any of their advertising or PR brochures is beyond me. I suppose that is their calling.

I'm actually offended that Christmas (or holiday) advertising starts prior to Halloween.

I don't want a Christmas present from the GAP or anyplace else, if I had my druthers they'd all just be card saying where they've donated time or money to a charity of thier choice...that is what I've told my kids and family. It won't happen...

Yeah. Once they find out that Holiday means "Holy Day", they'll ban that too.

Seattlegal--are you being opportunistic?

You go, girl...:)

There are also some pretty good ideas coming out of the SPCA.

Can't say that I'm surprised about the Gap, they have been known for years now to purchase their goods from sweatshops taking advantage of people, terrible working conditions, child labor etc. Places like Old Navy are the same, even Lands End began the practice.

Kudos Seattlegal, I know where I'm shopping this Christmas Season :0)

Peace

Hi,

Before anyone gives an "ethical" gift could I suggest that you read this short article.

didn't really think about it before... if you have any links to any articles about their sweatshops, id appreciate it.

Forgive me if all I can muster is a weak yawn for the perennial "war on Christmas" propaganda. I guess this stuff fires you righties up. Everybody loves Christmas, most especially retailers. But see, the "holidays" start with Thanksgiving or Halloween depending on how you look at it, and extend through New Year's. During that stretch of time Chanukkah occurs, and it's the solstice, which is important not just to "pagans", but anyone who likes being aware of the the solar and lunar cycles.

Of course the really cool thing about Christmas is that it's such a thoroughly postmodern holiday that you don't need to be Christian to dig it, and there's no reason the retailers shouldn't, in their everlasting search for larger profits, try out a more universalized promotional strategy. But you fundies seem to think if they say "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas" it's a "One World Government", ACLU, communist, sign of the beast conspiracy.

Merry Christmas!

Chris

If you're a semi-geezer like me and you remember the 50's , then you'll remember a guy named Stan Freeberg and his recording of "Green Christmas". He said it all first and best IMO.

flow....;)

Hey Blazn,

Maybe I spoke too soon. Apparently the Gap has been trying to mend their ways. The End of Gap Sweatshops?

Just goes to show, if I don't keep up with the news I could be spreading all kinds of nasty rumors :o

One day everyone who was alive during the fifties will be dead, and the world will be a much better place.:)

I hate to nit-pick, China Cat, but you forgot Kwanzaa.:p

Kwanzaa! Sheesh. It's too bloody late for Kwanzaa. If you wanted to sneak another tradition in you shoulda done it before the advent of the postmodern era. Kwanzaa...When I see a large selection of Kwanzaa cards at Barnes and Noble I'll relent.
