PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The city has decided that the Boy Scouts chapter here must pay fair-market rent of $200,000 a year for its city-owned headquarters because it refuses to permit homosexual scouts.

The organization's Cradle of Liberty Council, which pays $1 a year in rent, must pay the increased amount to remain in its downtown building past May 31, Fairmount Park Commission president Robert N.C. Nix said Wednesday.

City officials say they cannot legally rent taxpayer-owned property for a nominal sum to a private organization that discriminates...CONT'D

Some background info on the Boy Scouts of America to go with article:

Mission Statement
The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.

Scout Oath

On my honor I will do my best
To do my duty to God and my country
and to obey the Scout Law;
To help other people at all times;
To keep myself physically strong,
mentally awake, and morally straight.

Scout Law
A Scout is: Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous,
Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, Reverent

I'd like to see the documentation from National Council that states that they bar anyone who is homosexual.

Boy Scouts had an old ruling in this regard which was abandoned. However since they deal exclusively with boys aged 6-18 this is still a concern and replaced old thought with two deep leadership...insisting that no boy is ever alone with an adult leader as a safeguard.

It amazes me that an organization which is concerned for the welfare of their members receives constant abuse for same....when without it they would be subject to lawsuits and increased retribution from the public.

You could read the court papers: they fought all the way up to the Supreme Court for their right to bar us absolutely. It didn't used to be that way. The Court held that they were a purely private organization and could admit or not admit anybody they chose: fine; then they have no right to be subsidized by the public. I don't want them using public property on any terms except what would be demanded from anybody else.

I thought they fought to refuse to say they will admit homosexuals.

My understanding is they wanted to keep that specific language out so as not to incur further lawsuits. They say they don't discriminate, the do not delineate sexual preference.

Can you imagine the lawsuit in an organization for boys if their literature says they specifically accept homosexuals and then there exists an incident or a number of them....look at the millions the Catholic church is being sued for over untoward behavior toward their youth.

The big deal of the recent cases was in regards to atheists. The scouts are a religious organization, they don't specify what denomination or belief to ascribe to but that you have a relationship with spirit.

In research...I find that I was in error and stand corrected.

The official policy appears to be the same that Clinton instituted in the military....don't ask, don't tell.

Applications for leadership and membership do not inquire into sexual orientation. However, an individual who declares himself to be a homosexual would not be permitted to join Scouting. All members in Scouting must affirm the values of the Scout Oath and Law, and all leaders must be able to model those values for youth.

Consistent with the obligations of the Scout Oath and Law, Scouting teaches youth to show tolerance and respect for all human beings. The Scout Law requires youth to be helpful, friendly, courteous, and kind to all, and Scouts are taught to be respectful of those whose views may be different from their own. Scouting teaches both tolerance and clear moral values. Tolerance for all does not mean that all behavior must be accepted as appropriate for those in Scouting.
Scout leaders are also not allowed to smoke or drink in the presence of the boys.

No, it was over KICKING SOMEBODY OUT.
They say they don't discriminate, the do not delineate sexual preference.
I don't know where you get such a notion. They most certainly do say they discriminate, and insist on their right to do so.
