Allo!

Name's Maesi, I'm a 19 year old college student and I've found myself in a bit of a forced hiatus from organised academia (blah blah blah, have to get some surgeries). My majours are linguistics and political science, so that's where two of my main interests lay. I speak five languages so I figure I can rile five times as many feathers discussing politics than in just one language. Genius!

I now amuse myself by doing research for cemetery and painting my dog's nails, one being a bit more productive than the other, but I'll let you decide. (Though he does look smashing in hot pink.)

I live in Pennsylvania with my mum in what I call a zoo. I've got a bare-eyed cockatoo, two budgies, three cats, my before mentioned service dog (I'm disabled), a snake, two American Wild Mustangs, my flock of four lovely lady chickens, and fishtanks in almost every room.

I love reading, if I go a day without reading a book I might as well die. I also loving playing video games, knitting, and making a complete fool out of myself.

I'm a Unitarian Universalist Muslim, which, yes, does work. Quite well, if I say so myself.


A good friend of mine told me about this place, so I figured I'd join up and look around. I've seen a few familiar faces around here, so if I act up, y'all can just blame them.


I suppose if there's anything else you want to know, just ask.

I hope this is a typo. Maybe you meant seminary? Cemetary research sounds like a real drag, especially if it's a personal interest thing.

Heck yes! I mean--er, you too? My condolences. I am in your corner and all of that. It's not such a rare disorder, after all, this compulsive bibliophilia that haunts my waking. I could give you a link right now, but I'm feeling a bit rushed to pause and find it. So that's a bummer for you.

Right. Have I said too much? No? Just that the quality is, well, kind of pointless? I suppose it is the coffee animating my fingers.

Greetings, jamaesi! Welcome to the CR forums! Feel free to post your thoughts on all kinds of fascinating subjects here.

I am interested in learning just how being a Unitarian Universalist Muslim works. Never heard of that before. Usually, UUs are Christians with a greater liberal slant and perspective. Never knew Muslims joining that group. But maybe that's my ignorance. Perhaps you can enlighten us, hmmm?

Oh, do you mean the former Christian Forums? They seemed to have tolerated my presence, but I only stuck around about a day, LOL! I hear they've opened up to other Christians (like LDS, Unitarians, and Catholics- and about time, I say, there's no reason in the world to consider any of them nonChristians) but I'm pretty sure I'm still confined to the heathen bullpen. I've got better uses of my time, anyway. I think the dog's ready for a fresh coat of paint on his pretty little toes.

Nope, no typo, it's a cemetery, I work there with my mum.

It's not that bad, I actually rather like it... most of it's just going through the records and spotting mistakes, trying to link estates together... and then just marketing and sales to the people I manage to track down. It's a livin'.

I usually get assigned to the Jewish and Muslim burials just because no one else knows just what to do with us and our crazy burial rituals, LOL! But for me, I'm just being donated to science. I'll be more useful that way.

I know it bothers people, but I love talking about things like this. We're all going to die, and let me tell you about all the fun things we can do with your body! I'm honestly just waiting for some of the cremation and burial alternatives that are very popular in Europe and elsewhere to catch on here... like green burials (very close to Islamic burials) and resomation. Both much more eco-friendly...


I'll have to track that book thread down, I've been reading some good books lately... thanks for the heads up!

No, not Sanskrit, the closest I've come is Urdu and that's based more on Arabic. I'm more interested in modern languages anyway, except for classical Arabic being the language of the Qur'an and whatnot. Mine are English obviously, Portuguese, Japanese, German, and Arabic, and I'm working on Urdu and Farsi. I'm thinking of learning Spanish just because I can already understand it from the Portuguese.

I'm currently working on a sort of essay now about why I am a UU Muslim. But the short version of it is.. how doesn't it doesn't work. Both value learning, compassion, justice, tolerance, equality, and social activism.

I find with Unitarians or Universalists there's the more of it being "liberal" Christianity, but with UUism you'll find a constant striving of balance (without it being appropriation) between the Judeo-Christian roots and teachings of other religions. Last I checked with the cat-herding, humanists and agnostics make up the largest percent of UUists.

This may be another musing for another thread, but the fact that in too many mosques the fact that I'm a female means I have to be kept away from the other half of the Ummah behind a wall, or in a separate room, makes me less fond of going to a masjid and more fond of going to a UU organisation.

It's a wonderful experience at a UU congregation. I just love the tolerance and respect that everyone is given and gives. I love all the wonderful discussions I've had with so many other members and all the things I have learned.

Part of the misunderstood concept of jihad is spreading the message of Islam (though do not take this as me trying to convert, it is me trying to clear up misconceptions and false beliefs that surround Islam). I find that people who are UUs are genuinely interested in learning about other faiths, and especially Islam with how events are in this world... and they in turn will able better able to fight injustice against Islam and in the Muslim community itself.

I figure that talking to people who want to know what Islam is really about does me better than staring at the back of a wall. If I am able to tell one person about Islam and in turn they go out and say "no, Islam does not teach violence" or "no, Islam does not teach women are less than men"- that benefits everyone more.

If this makes anyone want to convert to Islam, then that's good for them, but not my intent in the least. My intent is just to get the facts and real teachings out there and engage in dialogue. I love both of my religions deeply.

Actually, seeing Muslimwoman's posts here was one of the main reason I wanted to join when I was looking around last night. And brownies? Hmmm, I'll have to find out more about these brownies I need to stay away from!

I would really want a green burial, don't want to be crowded on top of a bunch of other bodies, and think it would be more natural. Let the scavangers use what's left of my body, I wouldn't need it anymore. Whoops, about to go off rambling, enjoy yourself and have more cookies!

What are the languages you speak? I am so jealous, I find learning a language so difficult. I am a total bookworm too, could you imagine living in Afghanistan or somewhere they burn books Noooooooo.

What I would love to do if I didn't want to work in a linguistic field is open a green cemetery, one that was more like a garden/park than uniform rows of graves. G-d made nature, G-d is nature, we are a part of nature, and to nature and G-d we will return... I would much rather sit next to a pond under a tree and remember my loved ones and know that they are around me then cry at a bronze plaque.

And hooray, cookies! You've found one of the many ways to my heart.

Salaam alaykum, my sister!

It's wonderful to have animals around, isn't it? I would have to have some ducks and sheep... but maybe not the bats, hehe. I love bats, just not in my house. I used to live in Brasil and it was always a fright when one of them got indoors. But the ducks, along with all other fowl, are always sweet and entertaining to watch. Some royalty had chickens instead of peacocks, cheap entertainment! And with the sheep... oh I could spin my own yarn! I've been considering just spinning what all my dog sheds (too much!) but I don't think the quality would be that great.

And I miss having pigeons! I used to have fancy show ones, but my favourite was a wild pigeon with a hurt wing I named Nina. A neighbour boy brought her to me, saying his parents told him I was the "animal lady" and I would take care of her. Her wing never healed, wildlife services didn't give a hoot for a "rat with wings," so I kept her until I found her a home with a wonderful man who kept so many pigeons, just because he loved them. She was just the sweetest thing.

My languages are Japanese, Portuguese, German, Arabic, and English, of course. I'm working on Spanish and Farsi and Urdu- it's about time for the Urdu, though. Most people assume I'm Arabic... I'm Punjab (family hails from Pakistan, but the conflict between Pakistan and India breaks my heart) and Slavic, with a little Celtic and Germanic influences thrown in.

I could never live in Afghanistan... I'd die before I had to. No books, no freedom... I could never live in Pakistan, for that matter. I have a distant cousin who proposed to me who lives there, son of a tribal chief and in line to take over. Ugh. It would be a disgustingly rich, cushy life, but tribalism. I hate it. It's just what is wrong with too much of the Middle East today, too much of what is trying to take Islam even further away from what our dear Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessing be upon him, brought to us.
