Amish youth accused of drinking beer in buggy

Amish youth accused of drinking beer in buggy leads police on chase in New York - NYPOST.com

CONEWANGO, N.Y. -- An Amish teenager allegedly led police on a short chase in his buggy Monday after deputies observed him drinking beer in the vehicle in western New York.

According to authorities, Lewis D. Hostetler, 17, was seen driving his buggy with a can of beer in his hand about 1:00am local time while sheriff's deputies were patrolling on Route 62 in Conewango, N.Y., 59 miles (95km) south of Buffalo, The Buffalo News reported.

When officers attempted to stop the vehicle Hostetler led them on a brief chase, police said.

Hostetler was charged with resisting arrest, second-degree obstructing governmental administration, unlawful possession of an alcoholic beverage with intent to consume by a person under age 21, failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, insufficient tail lamps and littering on a highway.

an Amish kid, in a horse led buggy, with one measly can of beer... Haven't the police over there got any robbers or murderers to catch?

Busted for DWI in a buggy. Gotta love it.

Do the Amish allow for any kind of rebelling against authority?

Re: Amish youth accused of drinking beer in buggy

I know little except for a documentary film, and I'll give you the short version. The Amish are a Christian sect who believe in separation of themselves from the world and also that they're in the kingdom of God. They feel its important that their children freely choose to join their church, so in the teenage years Amish children are encouraged to see what life outside of the church is like for a year or so. Each Amish believer must condemn worldly living, and they can't do that if they haven't tried it. The young man in the article is trying out the world's ways before he commits his life to God.

They call it "the wilding years"; I saw an interesting documentary where an Amish woman was reminiscing about her wilding, and how touch-and-go it was whether she would come back to the community or not.
