Buddism or Ancient Lore?
Not really sure if this is the right place to put this thread, if it is incorrect, I am sure it shall be moved, and appologise upfront. Anyway, I have allways been interested, well admired, deeply... the way of the Samurai.... I know a bit, but would love to understand and know more of the Samurai. If anyone still lives this way? Or knows alot of the Samurai? I would really like to hear from you. I also love not just their way of life, their bushido, their bravery and honor but also the basics the way they made their villages the dedication they put into their ways everything it is indeed amazing. I have collected swords and armour for quite sometime also would like if possible any sites I can purchase more (obviously authentic not replica)

Re: Buddism or Ancient Lore?
Personally I think that the Samurai have been over glamourized. They were great warriors, that is true, but they were essentially a warrior class, and every class of people survives by exploiting the classes beneath them.
I am learning Kendo, the fighting style of the Samurai, and I have a great deal of respect for their abilities as warriors and scholars of war, but their politics were really no different that any other aristocrats.
Have you seen the film, "Ghost dog - Way of the Samurai" ? Its very good.

Re: Buddism or Ancient Lore?
Haven't been training very long at all, just a few weeks, but its great fun and Im hoping to stick at it for a long time.
I wanted to learn Ninjitsu but couldnt find a class, I just wanted people to ask me what I did in my spare time and to reply, "Im a Ninja"

Re: Buddism or Ancient Lore?
haha, nice. Although there is more to it than just calling yourself a Ninja, I haven't really done much kickboxing training but I would compare it to that in ways that the training is more pain than train. Your in the UK? Wow, I am sure there must be a class near you.. Or move down here to the south west I can point you in the direction of a class. Anyway keep up the Kendo, I have never trained Kendo but it is indeed a beautiful art and dedication is truly needed.

Re: Buddism or Ancient Lore?
well kendo isnt what the samurai used at all, the samurai used kenjitsu, kendo was a lesser form of the art taught to anyone who was not of samurai stature.
but of course you knew that right

Re: Buddism or Ancient Lore?
Samurai warriors used Ju Jitsu in unarmed as well as armed situations, which I have done quite a bit of for a couple years . Kendo is mainly a sword art but the downside to it is that it really only works the best on a katana. Then again I have really never took kendo so I don't know how well it will work using a Euro long sword . I have however partaken in traditional fencing (rapier sword fighting) and it works with almost any sword (including the katana).
Not sure what this thread has to do with Buddhism let alone ancient lore (unless you are talking about samurai lore ). Buddhism although it had many influences in Japan, it really wasn't the main belief and certianly not the Samurai's cheif religion. Shinto is where a lot of the warrior ethos of samurai culture took place although this is all but extinct in shinto at the end of WWII. Shinto has a lot of lore and mythology although Japanese copied many myths from the Chinese.
