Re: Burma

Looks like things are still underway over there. And here's a second article about other loathsome things the Myanmar Army's into to try to preserve their grip of fear upon the people there.

"An internet blogger and a writer who disguised an attack on Burma’s dictator in the form of a love poem were among dozens of activists sentenced to draconian jail terms as the junta ordered a fresh crackdown on dissidents."

Re: Burma

please consider...

Sign the petition below demanding UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon make the release of Burma's political prisoners, including Aung San Suu Kyi, his personal priority. We're aiming for 888,888 signatures by May 24th.
To: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

"Until all of our political prisoners are free, none of us can say that Burma is now truly on the road towards democratic change." Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, 1991 Nobel Peace Prize Winner, held under house arrest for 13 of the last 19 years.

The military government - the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) – must immediately and unconditionally release all political prisoners including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, Khun Tun Oo and Min Ko Naing.

The release of all political prisoners is the first and most important step towards freedom and democracy in Burma. We, the undersigned, call upon UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to make it his personal priority to secure the release of all of Burma's political prisoners by the SPDC.

Re: Burma

2 weeks before she was due to be released:

"Western governments have condemned the "disturbing" new charges brought against Burma's pro-democracy opposition leader, Aung San Suu Kyi.
British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said the Burmese military government was clearly looking for any pretext to extend Ms Suu Kyi's detention.
The US and EU also expressed concern, saying the move was not justified.
She faces trial on Monday for breaching the terms of her house arrest after an apparently uninvited visit by a US man"
