In regards to Jesus Christ, I think it started as a prayer, and then graduated to the concept of blaming someone for something we refuse to take personal responsibility for.
There is also the inherent shock value...same reason we use any curse word to raise the ire of those standing around. Add to this it is the law...what you resist persists...thou shall not use the lord's name in vain...breaking the law is relatively common...then...and now.

Oh . . . I get it now.
Something bad or incredible happens and someone prays, "Oh Jesus, Oh God, . . . Please help me!!!!"
Several decades, generations, conversations or rantings later, during which the "catch phrase" catches on and spreads . . . It becomes . . .
"Jesus!!!!!"
"Jesus Christ!!!!!"
"Oh my God!!!!"
"God Almighty . . . "
"Oooo la la!!!!"
"God damn it!!!!"
"Damn it"
"Mother of God . . . . "
"Jeez!!!"
"Sheeeesssh"
. . . when something bad or incredible happens.
