Filipino devotees crucify, whip themselves

Lenten ritual goes on despite opposition by Catholic leaders in Philippines

SAN PEDRO CUTUD, Philippines - Seven devotees were nailed to crosses on Good Friday in a northern Philippine village where the rites drew thousands of tourists and spectators.

The Lenten ritual is opposed by religious leaders in the Philippines — Southeast Asia’s largest predominantly Roman Catholic nation. But it has persisted to become one of the country’s most-awaited summer attractions in San Fernando City’s San Pedro Cutud village.

Cont'd

I dont know why they would do this. Christ already suffered and died for us.

“They take this religion to the extreme,” observed Gomas de Miguel, a tourist from Spain. “In Spain, we say we are Catholics but we don’t do this anymore I think.”
In the US all over there are Passion plays and re-ennactments at churches and scenes/tableaus with live performers...not to mention Gibsons recent movie...

I don't know of any that go to this extreme, but is it possible (contemplating the tourists statement.."but we don’t do this anymore") is it possible that this was a common occurance before we had movies faux depicting it?

And not to belittle what they are doing (I'm sure not ready to have 4" nails pound into my hands)...they are strapped on, and standing on a platform. A piercing is different from being suspended by the nails...It sure is a physical reminder though....
