Study: Female cheetahs sleep around

Story Highlights• Study: Female cheetahs have cubs from multiple males
• Infidelities ensure a broader genetic mix of the species
• Mating with multiple partners increases the risk of exposure to diseases
• Cheetahs face threats from human attacks and habitat loss

LONDON, England (Reuters) -- For female cheetahs in the Serengeti, the call of the wild is just too hard to resist as new research shows nearly half of their litters are made up of cubs with different fathers.
And while the serial infidelities of the females does ensure a broader genetic mix to help the survival of the endangered species, it comes at a cost, the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) said on Wednesday.

Now is it just me?? This sounds like the exact same thing that is purported to humans, these tramp/whore/adulterous female cheetahs....well who the hell are they sleepin around with anyway?? Is there not a correlation with male cheetahs also being a little promiscous in this endeavor as well?

Who named them cheetahs anyway....maybe it was due to behaviour...or some self fullfilling prophecy....maybe this wouldn't have occurred if we named them monagamahs?

Yes, there is some rediculousness to my questions, but the reality is....are scientists overly blaming the female of the species?? What did they do, get the males liquored up and take advantage of them?

Re: Is this sexist?

Are the scientists blaming cheetahs? Is it a cheetah's fault for behaving like a cheetah? This behaviour isn't news from scientists is it? Have scientists never noticed the behaviour of domestic cats (and the resultant mixed offspring)?

lmao Wil, erm...my thot is that you are being a tad oversensitive and seeing bias in neutrality. The article is written rather colourfully as is the natural bent of any journalist. Both the research biologists cited are .....yes...female!!

Re: Is this sexist?

In a slightly related story, I live with a chihuahua who humps a stuffed pink turtle more than three times her size. We just let her do her thing, poor thing, it's all the action she gets.

Maybe you should let the turtle out if you think its not getting enough action.

Re: Is this sexist?

my cat, a male, likes to try and make lurve to his brother... is this evidence of his undisclosed homosexuality? I have tried talking to him about it, but he remains tight lipped... except, of course, when he is reaming his brother...
