Re: just an observation....
When I was in Amsterdam, went to the Hemp museum... Unreal.... So many uses... yet when the 'H' word is mentioned... There is this odd reaction you can notice in peoples facial expressions heh.

Re: just an observation....
Umm...hello y'all--I hate to be a bore, but I hadn't seen this thread before. Just read back through all of this. Interesting, I thought--first I read the last post, and then jumped straight to the first post. Of course, then, I had to wonder how did it get from names of God to hemp? LOL, JUAN?
Anyway, I do know that what wil and Thomas talked about are the usual (and technically correct) reasons for the different ways we type The Name. But I have been thinking about this quite a bit. And so now, since this thread has come to the forefront again, maybe I'll add this thought.
Maybe one reason that the name of (if I am going to talk about this, then I have to pick one, so I'm with you Thomas) Adonai is to be so revered as to not even speak it is that once we speak it, and we all start saying it differently, then many begin to argue, saying that it is not the same God?
I dunno. Not very theological or technical or anything. Just a thought I had.
InPeace,
InLove

Am I not the 18th? No these 17 are "apart" of me...
Never heard of "Earl on T.V" Sounds slighty interesting I suppose.. Don't watch television shows.

I think I remember now. It's actually called "My Name is Earl." It's about a guy who ends up in hospital and decides it must be bad karma. He goes around making up for all the bad things he's done to people.

I think it has to do with how the Jews in Old Testament times addressed the God of Israel. His name was so sacred, saying it at all was an act of disrespect but people who were not even worthy to say it. I think when they wrote it down, they made it so that it was a word that . . . didn't make sense or couldn't be pronounced, to remind people that they weren't supposed to say His name, but say something else as a substitute that represented it.
"G!d" I think is a bit like that. Methinks people don't want to say "God" directly in case it might be misused or uttered in vain.
I'm kind of thinking though, if "G!d" is a way of expressing the idea that God's name is sacred, and a way of avoiding "God" then the name "G!d" is sacred, not "God." That's because "G!d" is an expression of one's respect for God's name. A person who says "G!d" does it out of respect.
But that opens the door for God's name to be disrespected even through use of "G!d." Use of "G!d" may represent one's respect for His name, but this could also be done recklessly, foolishly or in vain. Someone with no respect for God could easily use "G!d" disrespectfully.
For me, saying "God" expresses the idea that even if I tried hard to respect God and His name, to keep the idea of Him sacred, I will always fall short of that standard and therefore I claim not to be able to do so.
In that sense, what's the difference? Either way, the moral principle of respecting God, His title and His name can be desecrated. I think I'd be safe not claiming I have honoured Him enough.

Nice... abit like the eye contact thing? Example I like to lock onto peoples eyes... I will not move from staring into their eyes when in conversation I see it as way to show confidence, trust, respect, concentration and strength. Others would see it as uncomfortable and perhaps aggressive behaviour. Meaning that using that word for you is on the side of trust and respect for the diety... and believe that saying his title honors him? Cool.

Actually, God's real name is Howard. Or H-w-rd in Hebrew.

Re: just an observation....
Saltmeister--China Cat is fearless! Don't you know that?
Chris, the way I heard it (in church, as a matter of fact) was:
A dad was listening in on his little boy one evening as the child knelt beside his bed: "Our Father, who art in Heaven, Harold be thy name."
Please, it's just a sweet joke about children. I don't think "Adonai" would mind.
(Well, mine's a joke, anyway--can't always speak for the Cat.)

I was wondering where the Howard came from. Turns out it was the Lord's prayer. Didn't think of that one. How amusing. So it went from hallowed to Harold and then to Howard (it got confused twice). The kid must have been playing Chinese whispers.
