Yes they have been handing out these thin plastic flags for the medal winners to drape themselves in...and they do appear to be handled a little less gingerly than they used to be...maybe a change is afoot?

As to the bad weather and night, you are aware of whence that came yes? Our indigenous youth used to climb the flagpole and steal the flag from the forts. It became one of the right of passage type things for the young braves. Cost the US Army so much in flag replacements that a military rule was added, post a centry or light it, as night and inclement weather was when they'd steal it. Finely woven fabric like that was valuable to the Native American's and turning it into clothes wasn't appreciated either...

A bazillion American kids have pledged allegiance to the flag. They make you do that in school. There are a lot of us coots who think that our flag should be treated a certain way. It shouldn't be burned. It shouldn't touch the ground. It shouldn't be left up at night unless it's illuminated. I learned that stuff in scouts. There's a big difference between that and the nationalism that's on display at the Olympics. The truth is that professional sports has ruined everything. But it's cool to see ping pong and volleyball given their due.

What harm comes from a flag getting wet or dirty?.. And -making- kids stand and pledge an allegiance... lol I'd loved to have seen someone try and make me do that when I was a kid at school lol........ Feels like idolatry to me.... Not that I am trying to push the "thou shalt not worship idols" And all that, it just seems pointless.. Sorry :/

It's matter of conditioning. Depends on how you were raised, I suppose. Kinda like the Jesus thing. Maybe you've left all that Jesus stuff behind, but can you say you've erased your programming? I'm still a little afraid of making fun of Jesus, lol! I still won't let the flag touch the ground. Not defending, just saying...

I wouldn't say I've left it behind, but I to a point will joke about such things as jesus.. Of course we all have our own personally limits... such as I'll have a joke about him (In my opinion in tasteful terms lol) but I never use his name in profanity and I dislike it when others do... Call it Brotherly love... I love my brothers.. But still makes jokes about them lol... Some people bond like that... My whole family acts like that lol.... It's all in jest.

It seems usually only totalitarian gov'ts put such penalties on symbols. We've got a little out of hand and anyone that says different is labeled unpatriotic.

I sat down during the pledge from 7th grade on. Couldn't stomach the equal justice under the law part...still can't.

So you do have that choice? That's cool... (But I guess there is talk behind ones back?) From films and so on and so forth it always seems like YOU MUST DO THIS! lol... To me it seems like you're in some kind of south american dicatorship lol...

Scouts. Yep. That's where I learned my color guard routine. It saddens me every time I see the flag mistreated.

I think what many don't understand...Britain has their crown and royalty and sacred sites, all America really has is its flag.

Other countries can piss on their flags if they want to, my flag still means something to me.

Interestingly enough I read an article recently on beta/VHS, HDD/BlueRay in the end the decisions were dictated by the porn industry, so yes the current god is the almighty dollar which is swayed by sex. It used to be so goes GM so goes America, now so goes porn so goes technology?

The recent economic stimulus checks that were sent to Americans to boost our economy overall did little to any particular industry. Many used the money to pay down some debt, but again the porn industry rallied. A 30% bump in sales it is said for that month. Not only that sites that did polls on folks renewing subscriptions, the largest single answer as to why they renewed there subscription, econmic stimulus check....at least it stimulated something.
