Mormon Halloween bash bans 'cross-gender' costumes
Mormon Halloween bash bans 'cross-gender' costumes
A recent Halloween party hosted by a Mormon church ward in Utah angered at least one resident after fliers specified no "cross-gender" costumes.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports ( The Salt Lake Tribune) that meant no girls dressed as Harry Potter or boys as Lady Liberty at the party in Sandy.
Raquel Smith says she was "appalled" when she read the flier taped to her door. She is not a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The flier urged children to "wear costumes" but noted, "please no masks or cross-gender dressing."
Smith calls it "fear-mongering and hate-driven."
LDS Bishop Dennis Toone, whose ward hosted the party, says he thought it was church policy but it wasn't. He says anyone who didn't like the rule didn't have to come.

Re: Mormon Halloween bash bans 'cross-gender' costumes
I had a friend whose grandmother (a strict Christian) absolutley refused to allow the children to wear Halloween costumes. She was very fundamentalistic in her thinking, and everything was very black or white when it came to religion, no grey at all.
What she was basically saying was, Halloween costumes were satanic and inspired the children to think satanic thoughts. To her, everything was good or satanic, no middle ground, so Halloween costumes fell into the satanic category. (Although she never mentioned cross-dressing girls and boys ...)
By the way, the trend to not allow Halloween costumes is growing among some Christian groups.

Your grandmother must have never heard this classic prayer
Quote:
The Harry Potter Prayer
Holy Potter of the universe,
who are in Heaven,
Hallowed be your Patronus.
May the Lily in my heart
give birth to Harry.
I surrender my wand to you
that I may use it
only in conformity to your will.
Feed and sustain
my inner Harry Potter,
So that he may kill the basilisk
living at the root of my being
when I have learned to forgive
all the wrongs done me by others.
Send your Phoenix when I am
tempted, and deliver me
from the Voldemort in me.
Amen

Thanks wil for that fantastic link.

Blessed Samhain to all.
Yes in my old neighborhood we always had kids that we didn't see, and their homes were dark....
Me, I take a beer mug, following my dad's tradition, and my neighbors fill it, when I used to go around with my kids the other dads were always...."Hey, why didn't I think of that?"

Re: Mormon Halloween bash bans 'cross-gender' costumes
The statement these churches are making is that Halloween leads to satanism. (Does anyone disagree?)
I remember, when I was a boy, I used to play army. We used sticks for guns, played like we shot each other, then rolled dead in the grass -- it was a lot of fun. This did NOT lead me to want to join the real Army when I grew up and shoot people. These churches are saying my playing army as a kid made me want to grow up to kill real people, and they are dead wrong (pun intended).
Do these churches also prohibit teenagers from watching movies like Dracula and The Mummy?

--> How sad. And all because of a fear of satanism!

you cant tell people what to think, you might not like or believe what they believe but nevertheless they are allowed to believe what they like just like you are.

If you think my point is that I want to control what people are allowed to belief in, you are wrong.
