Now a school bans 13-year-old from wearing crucifix

A school provoked fury last night by ordering a devout Catholic schoolgirl to remove her cross necklace because it posed a health and safety risk.

Teachers demanded Samantha Devine remove her chain and tiny crucifix despite allowing Muslim and Sikh pupils to wear symbols of their religion.

Her family have vowed to fight the decision "all the way" claiming it discriminates against Christians.

Paul Jackson, the school's deputy headteacher, said: "The school has a policy of no jewellery to be worn by any students in years seven to ten. All parents and students are aware of this.

Anyone know how this is predjudicial?

As a soccer coach, we demanded the same of our girls. And if they had braces they had to wear a mouth guard. Now if I had Muslim or Sikh girl who wore a headscarf...that wouldn't violate the code...but earings, rings, necklaces, regardless if they had crosses on them or not...they came off, or they couldn't play.

Guess I was lucky no one found out....

The girl was not practicing sports. She was registering for classes. According to the article, children regualarly wear secular jewelry and are not admonished for it. Other children with different faiths regularly wear apparel that represents their faith. This girl was singled out after less than a month. On these facts alone, the parents will win their law suit should they press for one. It is pure selective discrimination of a particular religious faith, and it happens to be Christianity.

Namaste Q, we must have read different articles. I could swear it said that she was asked to remove the chain for safety reasons, and that a crucifix as a lapel pin would be ok. When we were kids all our 'hoodies' had draw strings, all our winter coats with hoods had draw strings, these have been taken out of clothing as children have died on playground equipment. This has caused regulations against neckware of youth. True her necklace was small and if caught would probably break, but if not and something happened...these parents would obviously sue...as others have which have caused the regulation.

The only one mentioning explusion was the girl, the school has not even mentioned suspension according to the article...which the vast majority of schools have as tool to enforce the same rule, no necklaces.

A. I am a Christian, I don't jump on Christians I disagree with frivolous lawsuits and making mountains out of molehills.
